Respecting Rhythms: The Importance of Punctuality at Fossil Bay School and Kindergarten

At Fossil Bay, we place great value on rhythm as the foundation of a healthy school and kindergarten day. In Steiner education, rhythm is not simply about schedules — it is about creating a breathing, predictable flow that helps children feel secure, settled, and ready to learn.

Our programme hours are:

School hours:
8:45am – 2:45pm, Monday–Thursday
8:45am – 1:30pm, Friday

Kindergarten hours:
8:00am – 3:00pm, Monday–Friday

Within these hours we shape the day with care and consistency so that children can settle deeply into learning and play.

ARRIVAL

When the day begins in a calm and orderly way, children can arrive fully into the space — greeting their teachers and classmates, entering the programme, and moving together into the shared work of the day. This gentle, consistent beginning supports emotional regulation, social connection, and readiness for learning.

Arriving late can be surprisingly disruptive for a child. It often means missing the social and emotional “landing time” of the morning — the greetings, warm-up, and transition from home into the group. Joining once activities are already underway can leave a child feeling out of step and requires teachers to pause and re-orient the class. We really appreciate families making the effort to arrive on time so each child can enter the day calmly with the group.

Kindergarten has a gentle arrival window between 8:00 and 9:00am, with the core programme running from 9:00–2:30. We ask that children arrive within this window and not later, so they can be fully present for the morning rhythm. Pick-up takes place between 2:30 and 3:00pm.

The school day does not have a trickle-in or trickle-out period. School begins promptly each day, and all students are expected to be present at the start time so the class can begin together.

DEPARTURE

The same principle of rhythm also applies at the end of the day. Clear and consistent pick-up times help children experience a sense of completion and allow teachers to close the day in a settled and intentional way.

We do not provide supervision outside programme hours. Time before and after the day is dedicated to preparation, meetings, planning, and care of the learning environment. Teachers may be working during this time, but they are not available to supervise children. Thank you for helping us protect this time so the programme can be thoughtfully prepared and held.

In the kindergarten, late pick-ups cut into teachers’ planning time and closing duties. For this reason, a late pick-up fee applies when children are collected after closing time.

To help afternoons run smoothly in the kindergarten, please make sure we have an up-to-date list of authorised pick-up people for your child. Please email Helen with the names of any friends or trusted adults who are permitted to collect them. This makes it much easier for us to support you if you are unexpectedly delayed and a friend needs to step in. Without prior permission on file, we are not able to release a child to another adult.

We also ask families to leave the grounds promptly at pick-up time. While it is always nice to connect with one another, loud play and extended time on the playground after the day has finished can interrupt meetings and work taking place inside. Once teachers have stepped out of their teaching role, children also tend to loosen their sense of the school and kindergarten boundaries, which can lead to equipment being broken or not put away. The children have had many full, rich hours and are usually ready to head away. We warmly encourage families to continue conversations and playtime at the beach or another nearby outdoor space instead.

Repetition and consistency are central elements of Steiner practice. When children can rely on a steady daily rhythm — arriving, beginning, working, playing, and closing together — they feel held by the day rather than rushed through it. We are grateful for your partnership in protecting this rhythm for all the children.
